Distinguished Ocampenses

Born in the Municipality of Ocampo

Juan Torres , originally from Ocampo, he was a musician considered as the creator of the denominated concept "melodic organ". During his career, he was accompanied by a large group with a brass section and also used a modern group, and in his ranchera music recordings, he included mariachis, arriving on several occasions to be accompanied by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.

Nabor Quiroz is considered one of the most important and recognized artists of sacred art in the region. His work can be seen in the Temple of La Soledad, in the Oratory of San Felipe Neri, Temple of the Señor de la Salud en el Barrio, Catedral, Cuarto de Cabildos, and various congregations in Mexico, Guadalajara and abroad. The quality of Nabor's work was such that the Bishopric commissioned him a work for Pope Benedict XVI, which is in the Vatican.

Dr. Maximiliano Salas Martínez was born in Loma Alta, Municipality of Ocampo, Gto. on October 12, 1903, from where, at the end of his elementary education, he moved to the city of Guanajuato, Gto., where he finished high school. He entered the School of Military Medicine in 1925, graduating on August 29, 1930. Thanks to his commitment and excellent preparation, he obtained the Summa Cum Laude diploma. He worked as a doctor in the health section of the Army of Ciudad Guzmán, Jalisco. He was the first Mexican pediatric pathologist and is considered a pioneer in the field of pediatrics in Mexico. The Ocampo Municipal Public Library is named after Dr. Maximiliano Salas Martínez.

Bishop José de Jesús Clemens Alba Palacios was born in the municipality of Ocampo in 1909. He was ordained a priest in 1926 and consecrated a bishop in 1929 in Antequera, Oaxaca. He served as Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Antequera from 1954 to 1959, and again from 1970 to 1984. He was appointed Bishop of Tehuantepec from 1959 to 1970. In 1984 he became Bishop Emeritus until his death in 1997.

José Guadalupe Portugal Aguilar began his musical studies at the UNAM School of Music in 1979, paralleling his degree in Philosophy under the supervision and validity of the Universidad del Valle de Atemajac. At the same time, in 1980, he began his studies at the Normal Superior, FEP, Federation of private studies, Normal superior, in the Educational Psychology career. Their certificates of studies are endorsed by the respective diplomas of completion of studies and the certificate of completion of studies.  He has worked in several churches in Mexico City and in the convent of the Teresitas sisters of Lindavista. He started working in 1991 at the INBG Children's Choir as a choir accompanist.  He worked as a logic and music teacher at the Colegio Francés Hidalgo for 16 years.  He worked at the Cristóbal Colón de la Villa School as a teacher of philosophical and social sciences for 16 years. He joined the INBG choir in 2009 to the present.

Negrete Narváez Family  - Tortas Negrete, a business in Ocampo, produces a delicious chorizo torta, a typical dish that many describe as the best and most exported in the world. Created with a secret family recipe, thousands of tortas are exported to the United States each year.

Descendants of Ocampenses Born Abroad 

Maya Delgado is a multi-talented artist who was born in Chicago, raised in Dallas and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Maya is bilingual and bicultural with parents of Mexican and Cuban descent. Since the age of 7, she has been professionally trained in acting, theater, music, voice and dance. Maya is also a songwriter and in 2017 she released her first EP, Shades of You . Maya recently appeared as "Young Tess" on the Emmy Award-winning Apple TV series Ghostwriter.  In 2016, she founded HeARTS of Maya, a foundation that provides educational scholarships to young people with a passion for the arts. To date, she has awarded 40 scholarships to deserving youth in Dallas and Los Angeles. In 2019, she received the SPARK! award, (awarded by the current president, Joe Biden) in Dallas, Texas, for her philanthropic contributions to the arts community.
